STOP PAYING FOR SOMEONE ELSE’S CLAUDE

Every platform promising to build your website or images for you is running Claude or ChatGPT behind the curtain. Here's why learning the frontier model beats renting someone else's wrapper around it.

Every few weeks there’s a new platform promising to build you a website, a funnel, a set of images, whatever — pay us, and we’ll handle it. What almost nobody tells you is what’s actually running behind that pretty interface: Claude, or ChatGPT, or some other frontier model, wearing a company’s branding on top. You’re not paying for magic. You’re paying a markup on access you could already have for $20 a month.
That’s the piece people miss. The frontier model — Claude, ChatGPT, whichever one you pick — isn’t just a tool inside those platforms. It’s the actual engine. The company selling you the “done for you” version built one specific use case on top of it and locked the door behind them. You get their version, their limits, their pricing, and the day they shut down or jack up the price, whatever you built with them is stuck.
Think about what that actually means. That web page builder you’re paying for every month? It’s running Claude behind the curtain, doing all the real thinking. But you only get to use that Claude for the one thing they built it for — building web pages. You don’t get to ask it a recipe question. You don’t get to have it write you an email, or help you code something else entirely, or think through a problem that has nothing to do with web pages. It’s locked to that one job. Meanwhile, the exact same $20 buys you your own Claude that does all of it — the web page, the recipe, the chatbot, whatever you need next. You’re not paying more for less. You’re paying the same and getting a fraction of the tool.
Learn to talk to the frontier model directly instead, and you’re not locked into anyone’s specific product — you’re working with the thing every product is built from. See a slick new tool that builds fancy web pages? You don’t need to buy it. You open Claude Code and say “I want something like this, help me build it.” If you know how to navigate Claude Code — or Codex, or whatever you’re using — you can build the same quality of thing yourself. Maybe not as polished on day one. But you’re not renting someone else’s interpretation of the model. You’re using the model.
I see this constantly with AI images and video. Everybody’s paying for Midjourney. I’ve never used it — not once. Everything on this site, every image, every video, came out of Grok and ChatGPT, with the occasional assist from HeyGen for video. Same underlying capability people are paying a subscription on top of, minus the middleman.

The trap is that it feels safer to buy the packaged version. Someone else already figured it out, so why not just pay them? But that safety is an illusion — the frontier models are improving faster than any wrapper built on top of them can keep up. A platform that felt cutting-edge six months ago is already behind what Claude or ChatGPT can do on their own today. You’re not just paying extra. You’re paying extra for something that’s already falling out of date, built by someone who has the same access to the same model you do.
This is the same argument as the $20-a-month piece, just one layer deeper.
Once you’ve decided the frontier model itself is worth the subscription, the next question is what else you’re paying for that the frontier model can already do for you — if you’re willing to learn how to ask.
